Hyperglycemia in Hospitalized Patients

This lesson provides an overview of the evaluation and management of hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients, excluding diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state. There is a focus on pharmacotherapy considerations for pharmacists.

Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  • Recognize the causes and pathophysiology underlying hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients
  • Identify appropriate glycemic targets for critically and non-critically ill patients
  • Select optimal anti-hyperglycemic medications and dosing strategies
  • Make medication adjustments for transitions of care and special populations
  • Prevent and manage hypoglycemia in the inpatient setting
