DVT Prophylaxis

This lesson is designed to provide PGY1 residents with a comprehensive understanding of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis. Deep vein thrombosis poses a significant risk to hospitalized patients, and this lesson equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, prevent, and manage DVT in various clinical settings. Participants will explore the pathophysiology of DVT, identify patient risk factors, and delve into evidence-based strategies for effective prophylaxis. By the end of this lesson, residents will be well-prepared to make informed decisions regarding DVT prophylaxis, promoting patient safety and optimal care.

Learning Objectives:

1. Assess DVT Risk: At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to conduct thorough assessments of DVT risk factors in hospitalized patients, including identifying clinical, patient-related, and procedural risk factors that may increase the likelihood of DVT development.
2. Select Appropriate Prophylactic Measures: Participants will gain the ability to select and implement appropriate DVT prophylactic measures based on individual patient risk profiles. This includes the understanding and application of pharmacological and mechanical interventions as well as the importance of considering contraindications and patient preferences.
3. Monitor and Evaluate DVT Prophylaxis: Residents will learn to monitor patients receiving DVT prophylaxis, recognizing potential complications and assessing the effectiveness of preventive measures.
